While on his own podcast, "The Richard Sherman Podcast," Sherman was interviewing Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson. During the chat, Sherman opened up about how Johnson's teammate, DeVonta Smith, is the reason why he retired.
Sherman revealed that while playing against the Eagles in week 6 of the 2021 season, his task was to cover the then rookie WR DeVonta Smith, and opens up about how difficult is was:
During this game, and his time covering Smith, he realized he was done. There was a certain moment where Sherman was internally begging the Eagles to not throw the ball to Smith, and he found himself wanting to get out of the game. Sherman said:
Sherman ended his 10 year career as a Super Bowl champ, a 5-time Pro Bowler, and a 3-time First-Team All-Pro. The future Hall of Famer was one of the best trash-talkers out there, and his game allowed for that. He will go down as one of the best to do it.
