Justin Fields: A Passing Phenomenon with Room to Grow

Let's address the elephant in the room: Justin Fields' arm talent is no joke. Despite all the naysayers questioning his throwing ability, the Chicago Bears' quarterback has shown time and again that he can sling it with the best of them. In fact, the NFL's official Twitter account recently served up a delightful reminder, treating us to a 67-second sizzle reel of Fields dropping dimes on opposing defenses. And trust me, it's worth watching on repeat.

Confession time: I've lost count of how many times I've replayed those jaw-dropping Justin Fields highlights. They're that good. Not only do these throws transport me back to some joyous moments in an otherwise forgettable year (did I mention the dreary winter?), but they also showcase the remarkable growth Fields has made as a passer in his second season.

Sure, we all marveled at Fields' rushing prowess. The images of QB1 expertly juking would-be tacklers and outpacing defenders still play on a loop in my mind. Apart from the likes of prime-era Mike Vick and MVP-level Lamar Jackson, we've rarely witnessed such electrifying athleticism from a quarterback. But now, we stand on the brink of discovering if Fields can elevate his passing game to new heights.

Interestingly, Lamar Jackson's success provides a blueprint that Fields and the Bears could follow (if they choose to). Moreover, Fields himself has expressed a desire to rely less on his legs and focus more on his arm. During Super Bowl week, he shared his aspirations:

"I was just trying to run around and make things happen out of busted plays. I think this year I just had to use my legs a little bit more to put points up on the board. But hopefully this coming year and the rest of my career, I won't have to run as much."

It's worth noting that Bears Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy openly admitted to borrowing plays from the Ravens' playbook last year, incorporating successful concepts into their scheme. The results were impressive and, personally, I'm all for history repeating itself in 2023.

Now, let's address the elephant's distant cousin, Charles Dickens. When it comes to Fields' throws, his story resembles a notable novel by Dickens himself.

There were undoubtedly moments of sheer brilliance for Fields after the mini-bye following Chicago's Week 6 loss to Washington. Over the ensuing eight games, Fields completed a remarkable 67% of his passes, boasted a solid 98.2 passer rating, and threw 12 touchdowns, more than double the number of interceptions he tossed (5). Digging deeper into the stats, his touchdown rate stood at an impressive 6.5%, while his interception rate showed improvement at 2.7%-both solid numbers.

However, to borrow from Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities," we must acknowledge the other side of the coin-the worst of times. Prior to the mini-bye, Fields struggled mightily, throwing more interceptions (5) than touchdowns (4), completing a paltry 54.8% of his passes, and posting a dismal 72.7 quarterback rating. It was a tough stretch, and no one was having a good time. Furthermore, the fact that Fields ended his season on a sour note against Detroit in Week 17 (7/21, 75 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 40.8 rating) remains a cause for concern. However, let's not overlook the progress he made during the season as a second-year player, navigating a new offense on the fly. We should celebrate a quarterback who responds well to adversity, and Fields did just that last year. Anyone genuinely analyzing the situation would agree.

In conclusion, I can't wait to see what QB1 has in store for us in his encore performance. Justin Fields is a passing phenomenon with immense potential for growth. So buckle up, football fans, because this young quarterback is ready to make his mark.
