With the upcoming season approaching, the Chicago Bears find themselves facing a critical choice regarding the extension of several key players. Among them is the talented cornerback, Jaylon Johnson. However, the team's decision-making process involves weighing various factors, including contract negotiations, potential trades, and the financial aspects of the game. It's a tough business, and tough choices must be made. That's why all eyes are on how the Bears will handle Johnson's situation, which adds an extra layer of intrigue to the mix.
Assessing Jaylon Johnson's Market Value
DaBearsBlog's newly appointed Editor In Chief, Robert Schmitz, has proposed an intriguing solution that could satisfy both the Bears and Johnson. The proposed deal would grant Johnson nearly $18 million in guaranteed money, while also providing him an opportunity to reset the cornerback market when he reaches the age of 26. However, one pivotal question arises: How does Johnson perceive his own worth?
From my perspective, it's apparent that Johnson sees himself as a top-10 cornerback and expects to be compensated accordingly. Yet, we cannot ignore the concerns surrounding his injury history and the lack of turnovers in his career thus far. Considering these factors, it's unlikely that Bears' general manager Ryan Poles would be willing to offer Johnson a blockbuster deal. As a numbers-driven individual, I have analyzed Johnson's performance, and while impressive, it doesn't quite reach the elite tier. This becomes even more evident when comparing him to Jaire Alexander of the Green Bay Packers, currently the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
That being said, the proposed solution by Robert allows Johnson the time and opportunity to prove himself as an elite player in his position. Personally, I would hate to see Johnson depart, and I would be willing to offer him a slightly higher contract, say, a two-year deal worth $28 million in total with $19 million guaranteed. Johnson consistently performs at a high level, which is not an easy trait to find or replace. Removing him from the current roster would undoubtedly leave the cornerback room in a similar state of concern as our edge rush situation. However, the numbers must align with his market value, and finding that delicate balance remains uncertain.
Nevertheless, one thing is certain: Ryan Poles likely has a predetermined number in mind, and he will remain steadfast in adhering to it. Just ask Roquan Smith, who experienced a similar situation during his contract negotiations.
