Under McCombs' leadership, the Vikings had one of their greatest stretches in franchise history. In his first year as owner, Minnesota went 15-1 and set a single-season record with 556 points scored. The Vikings reached the postseason four times during McCombs' tenure as the owner, including trips to the 1998 and 2000 NFC Championship Games.
McCombs purchased the Nuggets franchise in 1978 and also owned that organization for seven years before selling them to Sidney Shlenker in 1985. McCombs went on to become the owner of the Spurs in the 1988-89 season. Peter Holt, the current owner, joined as a minority owner in 1993 before eventually taking over as chairman in 1996. The McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin is named after McCombs.
McCombs married Charline Hamblin McCombs in 1950, and they remained together until her passing in 2019. The couple had three children.
