Jon Gruden has been absent from the football scene since the release of homophobic and racist emails that led to his departure from the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2021 season. However, there are now hints of a potential return. More than two years after the controversy that halted his NFL career, his name has resurfaced in connection with another head coaching position in the league.
Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal recently compiled a list of eight potential candidates for the next head coach of the Raiders, and surprisingly, Jon Gruden made the list. According to Bonsignore, there are individuals within the NFL who believe there could be a chance for the league to permit the Raiders to rehire Gruden if he were to drop his lawsuit against them.
Nearly two years ago, Jon Gruden initiated a lawsuit against the NFL, alleging that the league improperly leaked racist, sexist, and homophobic emails that Gruden had sent during his tenure as an ESPN announcer. These leaks were used to pressure him into resigning from the Raiders in 2021.
The emails in question spanned from 2011 to 2018 and were exchanged with former Washington Commanders executive Bruce Allen. They were discovered amid a broader investigation into the workplace culture of the Washington team.
Gruden contended that the exposure of these emails had devastated his career and had a detrimental impact on his endorsement contracts.
It's worth noting that Gruden was the head coach of the Raiders when the team relocated from Oakland, California, to Las Vegas in 2020.
