First of all, compensatory picks are draft selections awarded to teams based on a confidential formula used by the NFL. Per the league, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The compensatory picks can go from Round 3 to Round 7 based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. That value again is determined by the NFL. The formula that determines compensatory free agents is based on salary, playing time and postseason honors as well as contract length.

The Bears already lost Bilal Nichols, James Daniels and Jakeem Grant. They have not brought in that many top-tier, highly paid players. We also expect Allen Robinson to sign a very hefty contract in the next few days. There is also a great possibility that Akiem Hicks and even Andy Dalton could land a decent deal as well, which would help.

This means that, at this pace, we could expect at least a 5th round selection in 2023 and maybe even a 4th round. This would bring their overall total to eight picks. It would give far more flexibility to the Bears' draft capital than they've been used to under previous GM Ryan Pace.
