At Halas Hall's podium on Wednesday, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus wasn't initially aware of quarterback Justin Fields' comments made just moments earlier.

In a 12-minute session, Fields delved into his challenges early this season. He attributed his struggles to overthinking, influenced by his effort to perfectly follow the coaches' directives, leading him to suppress his instincts and play in a "robotic" manner. Although he expressed concerns with the coaching strategy, Fields shouldered most of the responsibility for his performance.

Fields later clarified his statements, emphasizing that ultimately, the responsibility lies with him.

Having listened to Fields, Eberflus felt the need to ensure the rapport between Fields and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy remained intact as they approached Week 3.

«I made sure to intervene," Eberflus stated. "I regularly attend quarterback meetings, which allowed me to easily check in. After a brief chat with Justin before our morning gathering, all seemed well. Transparency is key, and if I feel the need to step in, I won't hesitate. But this time, it wasn't necessary.»

On Thursday, GM Ryan Poles acknowledged understanding Fields' perspective, emphasizing the organization doesn't see him as someone who simply shifts blame. Getsy advocated for patience, viewing Fields' evident frustration as a natural phase of his NFL evolution.

Eberflus recognized Fields' effort to clarify his comments as a leadership trait.

"That was his genuine sentiment," Eberflus noted. "I always advise them to voice their feelings if they believe it's the right course of action. That's leadership. That's maturity. That's team spirit."

Fields' Wednesday remarks, according to Eberflus, were neither offensive nor misconstrued. They prioritize candid communication. To Eberflus, being truthful is an essential aspect of their bond.

Fields is set on playing freely against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

So far, Fields hasn't displayed the dynamism that captivated NFL fans last season.

With only four quarterback-designed runs in two games, Fields currently holds some of the lowest stats in several categories compared to his stellar rookie year with Matt Nagy.

The Bears' way forward is to tap into Fields' potential.

Cornerback Jaylon Johnson added, "We've always seen Justin as a dynamic playmaker. If he's not shining, it's not due to lack of skill, but perhaps mental challenges."

Acknowledging Fields' concerns, the Bears now face the challenge of devising a strategy that lets him play to his strengths, especially against the formidable Chiefs defense.

When questioned about Fields' comfort with the adjustments made, Eberflus diplomatically said, «He's eagerly anticipating the game, that's evident."

Excitement aside, it's crucial for Fields to feel genuinely understood and for his concerns to drive meaningful changes. If not addressed, the Bears could find themselves in a familiar, unsettling position during the offseason.
