It's that time again, and we kick things off with ESPN's Jordan Reid presenting the first ESPN mock draft of the year. Back in July, Reid had already given us a glimpse of his early mock, where he projected USC's Caleb Williams to land with the Cardinals. Our very own Christian D'Andrea also had the Buccaneers selecting Williams in his initial 2024 mock draft.
Now, in Reid's latest draft projection, the burning question centers around which quarterback should be the first to be chosen by teams in desperate need of a signal-caller. In a surprising twist, Reid predicts that the Chicago Bears, who already have Justin Fields, will select Caleb Williams as the top overall pick. Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos, struggling with Russell Wilson, are forecasted to take North Carolina's Drake Maye.
Here's what Reid had to say about the Bears' potential selection of Williams, facilitated via a trade with the Panthers:
For the second consecutive year, it appears the Bears may end up with the coveted No. 1 overall pick, thanks to a trade with the Panthers. ESPN's FPI currently assigns a 39.8% probability to this Carolina pick securing the No. 1 spot, setting the stage for a compelling decision for the Bears. The jury is still out on Justin Fields as the long-term answer at quarterback for the team. Fields currently ranks 27th in Total QBR (39.3) and 26th in completion percentage (61.7%). General manager Ryan Poles lacks any prior association with Fields, as he did not draft him in 2021, and the quarterback's growth as a passer has been inconsistent.
Selecting Williams would enable the Bears to hit the reset button with a rookie contract and acquire the top-rated player in the draft class. Williams' exceptional field vision and his dynamic ability to improvise when plays break down set him apart. He has already recorded eight completions of 20-plus yards while on the move this season, including eight touchdown passes and just one interception. Adding Williams to the roster would give Chicago another first-round talent to build around.
So, there you have it, the early 2024 NFL Mock Draft buzz. And don't forget to take a look at Christian D'Andrea's own early 2024 NFL mock draft for more insights and predictions.
