In a surprising move, Washington Commanders declined the fifth-year option on star defensive end Chase Young's rookie contract. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, Young's playing time has been limited to 12 games over the past two seasons due to a torn ACL he suffered in the middle of the 2021 season. If the Commanders fall out of playoff contention or choose not to extend Young's contract, he could become a top trade target ahead of the deadline.
ESPN's Seth Walder recently proposed five blockbuster trade ideas for the 2023 NFL season. Among his suggestions was the idea of the Commanders trading the 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for 2024 third and fifth-round draft picks.
Walder cited Young's ability to defeat blocks and generate pressure as key reasons why the Ravens might be interested in acquiring him. The Ravens recently extended the contract of defensive tackle Broderick Washington to bolster their interior defensive line, but the edge rusher position remains a weakness. With Tyus Bowser, Odafe Oweh, and David Ojabo currently at the top of Baltimore's depth chart, adding Young could provide an immediate boost to the group at a minimal financial cost - approximately $1 million in salary, according to the Roster Management System.
If the trade proves successful, the Ravens could potentially re-sign Young or let him go for a compensatory pick, which they would have a better chance of receiving than the Commanders if they retained Young this year. Even if the trade doesn't work out, the Ravens could still likely secure a compensatory pick if Young signs with another team next March.
The Ravens appear to be a suitable destination for Young. Last year, Justin Houston led the team with 9.5 sacks but was not re-signed, opting for a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers. Calais Campbell, who tied Justin Madubuike with 5.5 sacks as the second-highest on the Ravens, was released. Given their traditionally blitz-heavy defense, the Ravens could certainly benefit from adding more established playmakers to their defensive line.
