In Mel Kiper's revised mock draft, Bears Invest First-Round Pick in Defensive Player
NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper recently unveiled his updated mock draft post free agency, suggesting the Bears bolster their defense with the ninth overall pick.
With the acquisition of Keenan Allen, Kiper believes the Bears' priority for a top receiver has diminished. Instead, he anticipates GM Ryan Poles shifting focus to either an edge rusher to complement Montez Sweat or fortifying the offensive line. Kiper leans towards the former, projecting the Bears to select Florida State's Jared Verse at No. 9.
"Verse's combine performance showcased impressive testing numbers, despite some reservations about his 2023 tape," Kiper explained. "While inconsistent, his physical attributes at 5-foot-4, 254 pounds offer a promising arsenal for potential dominance as a pass-rusher in the NFL, provided he hones his skills effectively.
"The Bears have demonstrated savvy offseason maneuvers, and if their rookie quarterback excels, they could emerge as contenders in the NFC North."
During his final season at Florida State, Verse tallied 41 total tackles, nine sacks, along with one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
