The recurring missteps of Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles, particularly evident in the contract dilemmas surrounding Jaylon Johnson and recent addition Montez Sweat, suggest that even a layperson might navigate the role with more savvy. It's like watching a masterclass in futility as Poles seems to excel at boxing himself into corners, leaving the Bears' faithful in a perpetual state of dismay.

Just this Wednesday, after trade possibilities fizzled out, Johnsonon the tail end of his rookie dealvowed to maintain professionalism and avoid becoming a sideshow for the remainder of the 2023 season. That said, he did offer a significant footnote regarding Sweat's potential new deal.

Johnson openly admitted that he would take issue with Sweat, a newcomer to the Bears who hasn't even donned their jersey in a game yet, receiving a contract extension before him.

To complicate things further, Poles mentioned that they're making efforts to secure Sweat for the long haul in Chicago. Meanwhile, Johnson has resolved to halt any contract discussions with the team until the season's close, positioning Sweat to possibly secure his deal first, as Poles seems inclined to act swiftly.

It's perplexing, to put it mildly: The Bears, desperate to bolster the league's weakest pass rush, jumped at the chance to acquire Sweat without sealing an extension, all the while entangled with an increasingly disenchanted cornerstone cornerback.

Johnson, who has been a stalwart defensive presence for over three seasons, would be justified in feeling slighted should the Bears prioritize a fresh face over his proven tenure.

And then there's the prospect of Sweat not even securing an extension after all thiswhat then? If a second-round pick was the price for this gamble and they end up slapping the franchise tag on him, this could set Johnson en route to his exit come free agency.

So when I argue that I could steer the Bears with greater competence than Ryan Poles, it's no grandiose claimit's an indictment of a low threshold for success. Creating a financial tug-of-war between two pivotal players? It's a bewildering strategy that could only seem logical to the most beleaguered of decision-makers.
