Entering the 2023 NFL Season, the spotlight was firmly on Justin Fields due to the considerable buzz surrounding him.
During the offseason, Fields made frequent appearances in the media, sharing his ambitious goals for both himself and the Chicago Bears. He not only expressed confidence in changing the Bears' recent fortunes but also set his sights on a whopping 4,000 passing yards for the season. Achieving this would mean breaking a long-standing franchise record, as no quarterback in Bears' history has ever breached the 4,000-yard mark in one season.
However, the start to his season hasn't lived up to his lofty declarations. Sports analyst Dov Kleiman shed light on Fields' numbers over the first two weeks, highlighting a modest tally of two touchdowns against three interceptions. Averaging 213.5 passing yards over these games, Fields is currently off track to reach his 4,000-yard target. If he continues this trajectory, he'll fall short by over 300 yards.
While the season is still in its early stages and Fields has ample opportunity to course correct, it does beg the question of the Bears' internal sentiments. Despite their abysmal 2022 season and landing the coveted No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Bears' faith in Fields led them to trade this pick to the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers subsequently picked Bryce Young.
As Young is yet to truly establish himself in the league, it's too soon for analysts to make a comprehensive evaluation. However, if the season unfolds with Fields faltering and Young excelling, it might be a challenging period for the Bears' faithful.
