Alex Shapiro of NBC Sports Chicago tried to get some answers, but even the words of Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus didn't provide much clarity. Eberflus simply said, "I certainly want to see him get more action at some point." Vague, to say the least.
We're all trying to understand how coaches are adapting to the relatively new three-game preseason schedule. The old four-game schedule often featured the third game as a dress rehearsal, with starters getting more playing time. But that's no longer the case.
For Fields, my hope is to see him in action for at least 3-4 drives during the upcoming game. That could take him from the first quarter into the second. Will that be enough for his development? I honestly can't say for sure.
Going forward, I'd love to see Fields get a full half of game reps in the preseason finale. But is that too much to ask? There's no handbook for this, and determining the right amount of playing time for a third-year quarterback like Fields, who still has room to grow, is no easy task.
While I typically enjoy the challenge of open-ended questions, figuring out Fields' playing time deserves a more concrete answer. We're all waiting to see just how much more action Fields will get in this preseason.
