Essentially Getsy will be deriving an offense scheme around the «Shanahan Tree» where LaFleur blossomed from. Getsy was vocal when hired about the identity his scheme would be centered around stating «The systems that I've been a part of, specifically these last three years, too, these are quarterback-driven systems, right? So everything is about tapping into that position and building the offense around it. It's gonna be the same thing here. We're gonna build this thing around this quarterback position.».
This is promising for Bears fans for a few reasons. Identity is crucial of course after that arguably being one of the biggest flaws in the recent Bears offenses of the past. Also, this is promising due to Getsy being selected to work with Fields shows confidence in not only Getsy and his offensive scheme but the potential in QB Justin Fields.
For any of you who may not be familiar with the Shanahan style of offense, this is essentially going to be a West Coast-style passing game with a large amount of an outside zone run scheme. You can use the Rams, Packers and 49ers are present team examples of this.
See below Getsy discussing the importance of footwork, rhythm and timing. Attention to detail is huge, a master of your craft is key and he gets that and will help Fields learn that.
Protecting the QB, letting the rushing attack drive the passing game and a commitment to run the ball are expected to be what we should anticipate in a 2022 Bears offense as we watch Getsy, Fields and company grow and develop chemistry.
Head Coach Matt Eberflus recently spoke highly of Fields and his early experience in Getsy's offense, «He's going to have a clear understanding of what the offense is and he's really doing a good job right now of grasping that and helping to teach it to the other players,» Eberflus said.
