Sweat revealed to NFL.com that he was "definitely discouraged" by the trade, considering he had started his fifth season with the Commanders and recorded 6.5 sacks in eight games. Nevertheless, his outlook changed for the better after signing a four-year, $98 million contract extension shortly after the trade. In his first nine games with the Bears, he added six more sacks to his record.
"Yeah, just like any athlete who wants to secure their financial future, it was a significant relief," Sweat commented. "I think it allowed me to play with more freedom and confidence."
The Bears are optimistic that Sweat, who now plays with a sense of liberation and confidence, will continue to excel in his first year under the new contract. They view his half-season performance in Chicago as a promising sign of even greater things to come in the future.
