A day after inking a lucrative four-year, $98 million contract extension with the Bears, defensive end Montez Sweat took the field for the first time in a Bears uniform on Sunday. Unfortunately, his debut came in a 24-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints at Caesars Superdome.

Sweat's performance in his first game with the Bears was rather subdued, but that was expected given the limited time he had to familiarize himself with the playbook and establish chemistry with his new teammates, having only joined the team on Wednesday.

In the loss to New Orleans, Sweat was credited with two tackles and a pass defensed. However, the Bears' newly acquired star edge rusher was far from satisfied with his modest impact, stating, "It wasn't enough. I've got to get there more. I've got to get more production. I was getting one-on-ones I need to win those. I'm going to get back to the drawing board, review the film, and identify areas for improvement moving forward."

Despite his limited influence, the Bears felt the positive impact of having their new star edge rusher on the field. Safety Eddie Jackson noted the boost that comes with adding a dominant player like Sweat to the roster and expressed confidence that Sweat would continue to integrate into the team.

When Sweat arrived at Halas Hall, he had contemplated various factors before committing to a long-term deal with the Bears. While the long-term security is reassuring, his primary focus remains on winning games and being productive on the field.

Sweat acknowledged the need for adaptation as he transitions to a new scheme and rush partners, and the Bears are committed to helping him acclimate quickly. They understand the urgency of improving their pass rush, having recorded zero sacks and just two hurries in Sunday's game.

Sweat recognizes that success will depend on his dedication and collaboration with coaches. He emphasized that diligent study and hard work could expedite his adjustment to the team's system.

With the Bears' current 2-7 record and a meager average of one sack per game, both Sweat and the team are aware of the pressing need for heightened production. While they have a long-term vision for Sweat's impact, they remain confident that improvements will materialize over time, even as they continue to work towards that goal.
