With the No. 2 selection, behind the Chicago Bears, the Commanders are reportedly leaning towards North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, as per Jeff Howe of The Athletic. Maye has long been considered the frontrunner for the second pick:
"Rival team executives believe the Washington Commanders are strongly considering Maye and view him as the leading candidate for the second overall pick."
Barring a trade, it's anticipated that the Bears will part ways with 2021 first-round pick Justin Fields and opt for USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick. Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, has been widely expected to be the top pick for several months.
Williams, Maye, and LSU's Jayden Daniels are the consensus top three quarterbacks in this year's draft. The New England Patriots, holding the No. 3 pick, are expected to select one of them depending on who remains available.
In his final college football season, Maye showcased impressive stats, completing 63.3 percent of his passes for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, in addition to scoring nine rushing touchdowns.
