McShay is a highly regarded draft analyst, but his assessment of Georgia Bulldogs defensive tackle Jalen Carter was deemed unfair when he suggested that the 21-year-old had "character issues," and advised teams to avoid drafting him.
"Regarding Carter, it's intriguing. We all agree that he's a phenomenal player on the interior; it doesn't require a super scout to figure that out. However, with Carter, there are some character issues: Does he get along with everyone? How is he in the locker room? Those types of issues," McShay said at the time. "I realize it's early in the process, but I'm warning everyone out there - Carter's going to be a hot-button name when we discuss some of the intangible aspects of it."
It has since been revealed that Carter used his scholarship money to pay for a teammate's meals last season. Walk-on Weston Wallace was not entitled to free meals like the rest of the team due to his status, but Jalen made sure to cover his lunch every day.
Wallace praised Carter's positive character in quotes cited by The Athletic.
"Jalen heard about that. I'm the only walk-on in the defensive line room, and he said, 'I won't allow that to happen.' So he used his scholarship money to pay for me to have lunch every day," said the offensive lineman.
"You don't truly know him if you think otherwise. You can ask anyone on the team, whether it's the offensive line that he challenges every day...everyone thinks he's a fantastic person, and I believe he'll be an asset to any team that selects him."
Currently, McShay is not very popular among fans...
