In the article, Schrock included 3 key headlines for his observations:
1) "Backup QB controversy?"
QB PJ Walker was set to be Justin Fields' backup QB this season, but after going 1/4 with only 6 yards, the Bears pulled him out of the game and replaced him with undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent. Bagent put on a show while in the game, where he went 9/10 on passing, and even ran in a TD. It looks the Bears staff need to figure out who they want as their QB2, as Bagent looks like the better option now.
2) "Defensive rookies show good and bad"
Schrock mentions in this headline that even though some of the defensive rookies made some good plays in the game, they lacked consistency, which allowed the Colts to score 24 points.
3) Bubble guys make their case
And lastly, Schrock explains how LB Trevis Gipson and DE Terrell Lewis are both currently on the roster bubble, but showcased that they both deserve a spot on the roster. They both played solid games in both preseason games, and showed consistency with their performance.
However, 2 other guys who are on the bubble did not show up. Wide receivers Equanimeous St. Brown and Dante Pettis had opportunities to prove their talent, but fell flat in the attempt. St. Brown only played for 2 series in the game, but when the ball came to him, he dropped it. And with Pettis, he was a disappointment with his punt returns, but was decent in catching
The Bears were not awful last night, but they do have a lot to work. However, many moments were great to see, and the Bears should be good to go by week 1 of the regular season.
