Nigerian athlete Roy Mbaeteka forsook his secure spot in the International Player Pathway (IPP) last season after catching the eye of the New York Giants. Though that stint wasn't fruitful, he's now pinning his hopes on seizing the opportunity with the Chicago Bears this time around.

Opting for the Giants over a guaranteed roster spot through IPP might have seemed risky, but Mbaeteka was drawn by the team's appeal, especially following conversations with his mentor, Osi Umenyiora. Sharing his initial experience with the Giants, Mbaeteka commented to ESPN, "The vibe was instantaneous, and the guidance I received from Osi, given his history with the team, assured me it was the right move."

Yet, despite the whirlwind experience with the Giants, he felt more inclined to rejoin the IPP for further growth, ensuring he could secure his position with the Bears for the entire season.

With only three years of American football under his belt, Mbaeteka is determined and believes his game has advanced considerably. Having already appeared in two preseason games each for the Giants and the Bears, he's optimistic about his upward trajectory. Emphasizing his growth, he stated, "The coaching, culture, and community in Chicago have been incredible. Every day is a new opportunity, and my aim is to make the most of it."

Mbaeteka also envisions himself as a guiding figure for fellow Nigerian NFL aspirants emerging from Umenyiora's Uprise program in Lagos. After being the first from these camps to play in an NFL preseason, others like Kenneth Odumegwu (Green Bay Packers) and CJ Okoye (Los Angeles Chargers) have followed suit.

Discussing his camaraderie with them, Mbaeteka expressed, "It's heartwarming to see them flourish. Their success is a testament to our collective dreams and aspirations."

Back in Nigeria, Mbaeteka's rise in the NFL is a beacon of hope and a testament to the growing popularity of the sport, an initiative spearheaded by Umenyiora's outreach. Drawing parallels between the NFL and the NBA's prominence in Nigeria, Mbaeteka is hopeful. He quipped, "I foresee a time when American football will be revered in Africa just as much as soccer or basketball."

As the Bears gear up for their matches against the Buffalo Bills and the Green Bay Packers, Mbaeteka's supporters, especially his family, will be closely watching, cheering him on every step of the way.
