Caleb Williams concluded the collegiate season just as he initiated it standing at the forefront as the top quarterback prospect eligible for the draft in college football.

Yet, Williams isn't without his flaws. A certain NFC general manager confided to Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports, sharing a sentiment that gave pause to the conversation:

"There's something about Caleb Williams that concerns me, even though his talent is undeniable," the NFC GM remarked in Robinson's piece. "Opting for him could grant more time and a cost-effective deal, allowing for further team development."

To clarify, this isn't an instance to set off alarms based solely on one anonymous general manager's input. It's entirely possible this could be a strategic move to manipulate Williams' draft status such maneuvers are not uncommon in the NFL landscape, appearing almost annually. However, for the sake of discussion, let's consider the comment at face value.

In the broader picture, Caleb Williams stands out as a remarkable prospect. The USC quarterback has claimed the Heisman Trophy, racked up significant yardage, scored numerous touchdowns, and produced an array of dynamic plays to compile an impressive collection of highlights. To appreciate his talent, one can relish some of those moments:

However, there is a notable concern fumbles.

Turnover-prone plays are a red flag for scouts, and Williams' record shows 30 fumbles since 2021, the highest in the FBS during that timeframe. That's an alarming statistic. As a critic of Justin Fields' fumbling issues, the thought of entrusting the offense to another quarterback prone to fumbles is disconcerting.

This does not detract from Williams' potential as a draft pick; he certainly has plenty to offer. But as Bears enthusiasts, it's prudent to be aware of a player's full spectrum of abilities and liabilities as we head into an off-season that could herald a change in quarterback. When concerns are voiced by a peer in the league, they deserve due attention and scrutiny.

The Bears' due diligence in their evaluations is essential. It's all too easy to be swept up by the hype surrounding a 'surefire' prospect, especially with the attractive prospect of building a team around a quarterback on a rookie contract. Nonetheless, our discussions should delve deeper than just the surface level. Although the time for in-depth conversations on Williams' fumbling issues may not be now, it's important not to disregard these concerns entirely. Let this serve as a point of reference for future discussions.
