I think this is amazing. Of course, the NFL is a great business and you can make a lot of money. However, according to some sources, the average career length is about 3.3 years for players across the NFL. I truly expect Montgomery to play longer than that but you get what I'm saying. There is a life after football just as important as the NFL. It's so great to see him making good decisions for his future.
What makes this even more impressive is that David does not come from an easy childhood. In fact, he does not know his father, and his mother moved the family numerous times around Cincinnati due to economic hardship. Montgomery mentioned that he remembers using the oven for heat, and even boiling water collected from gas stations in the bathtub. He has a brother who was incarcerated for drug trafficking and murder. As if this isn't enough, after scoring a touchdown, Montgomery frequently holds up a "V"-sign in memory of a high school teammate and role model who was murdered during a home invasion.
After all of that, Montgomery is still trying to be a great citizen and he keeps helping others around him. While he was with Iowa State, Montgomery was chosen as a semi-finalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award for his efforts in befriending Hunter Erb, a 6-year-old who was born with multiple congenital heart defects and orchestrating a team visit to Marshalltown, Iowa to help clean up after a tornado.
What a great human being. I am really proud to be able to say that he is on my team!!
