The 2017 NFL Draft remains a source of frustration for Chicago Bears fans, who selected Mitchell Trubisky as the No. 2 overall pick, while passing on Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs would go on to draft Mahomes 10th overall, making him the second quarterback off the board, with Deshaun Watson being selected by the Houston Texans two picks later.

Since that fateful day, Mahomes has won the league MVP award and captured his first Super Bowl championship. He now has another chance to win his second ring, while the Bears, who finished the season with a 3-14 record, own the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Last week, during an interview, Patrick Mahomes' father stated that the Chicago Bears informed them they would select Mahomes third overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. However, during an appearance on 670 The Score's Parkins & Spiegel Show, Mahomes clarified his father's comments. He told reporters in Arizona ahead of Super Bowl LVII: "My dad took it a little far. It wasn't that I thought the Bears were going to draft me, but I was told that if they drafted a quarterback, I would be the quarterback they drafted. My dad acted like they were going to draft me for sure in that interview, and I don't know if it was that serious." Mahomes went on to say that Kansas City was always the place he wanted to play.

If the Bears had selected Mahomes, they may have been preparing for the Super Bowl instead of the 2023 draft. While they selected Justin Fields 11th overall in the 2021 draft, who showed promise this season, he has not yet proven himself to be the long-term solution. The Bears are unlikely to draft a quarterback this year, which may prove to be another costly mistake in the future.
