The coming season brings an intriguing situation for the Chicago Bears, especially regarding the contractual negotiations with Jaylon Johnson. Top-tier talents like Johnson are rarely seen in the free agency market, yet there's a compelling argument for both parties to bide their time on this matter.

Is it Prudent for the Chicago Bears to Delay Jaylon Johnson's Contract Extension?Even with the recent draft selections of Tyrique Stevenson and Terell Smith, it's probable that the Chicago Bears are keen on extending Johnson's tenure. Imagine a defensive backfield featuring Johnson, Stevenson, Kyler Gordon, and Smith - it's a prospect that should excite any Bears fan. However, the sticking point in negotiations will likely be the price tag.

Johnson was undeniably the Bears' premier cornerback last season, often avoided by opposing offenses who instead found success exploiting the other secondary options. Consequently, Johnson might justifiably seek top-tier remuneration, comparable to the league's highest earners.

However, when Johnson's performance is measured against players such as Cameron Sutton and Charvarius Ward, he concedes more yardage, allows more touchdowns, and secures fewer interceptions.

Moreover, Johnson displays considerable disparity between his zone and man coverage skills. He struggles in man-to-man situations but truly shines as an elite cornerback in zone coverage. How does one appropriately value such a player?

Fortunately, the zone-heavy scheme employed by Matt Eberflus plays to Johnson's strengths. Yet, teams who rely heavily on man coverage won't be rushing to offer Johnson a hefty contract, which ultimately reduces his bargaining power.

This puts forth a compelling argument: Johnson sees himself deserving of top-tier pay, while the Chicago Bears might view him as an above-average secondary option. It might take an entire season for both parties to agree on a mutually acceptable valuation.

Johnson's second season in Eberflus's system could certainly influence this consensus. With a potentially stronger group of cornerbacks and a more effective pass rush at his side, Johnson might have increased opportunities to make game-changing plays.

Delaying the contract extension could also work to Johnson's advantage, allowing him to further prove his worth before the offseason. Similarly, for the Chicago Bears, witnessing another consistent season from Johnson could provide them with the confidence needed to offer him a sizeable contract extension.
