REPORT: Detroit Lions OC Is Demanding An Insane Amount Of Money To Be Head Coach Next Season
Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson is anticipated to be the most sought-after candidate for an NFL head coaching position this offseason.
At 37 years old, Johnson is part of a growing trend of highly sought-after offensive strategists who are being considered to lead NFL teams, largely due to his role in elevating the Lions' offense to a top-five ranking over the past two seasons.
Despite the high demand for his coaching prowess, potential suitors might be cautious due to the reported contract demands.
According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, Johnson is seeking a salary of "at least or around $15 million per year" to take on a head coaching role. One team in the hunt for a new coach is the Los Angeles Chargers, who recently parted ways with head coach Brandon Staley following a lopsided loss to the Las Vegas Raiders (63-21). The Chargers are viewed as one of the top destinations for Johnson for several reasons.
Johnson has played a significant role in Jared Goff's resurgence, helping him deliver some of the finest performances of his career. The team may be interested in having him work similar magic with Justin Herbert.
Additionally, Austin Ekeler could benefit from Johnson's coaching, as he has guided the Lions to currently possess the NFL's third-best rushing unit.
Johnson first joined the Lions in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach under Matt Patricia, steadily progressing to the roles of tight ends coach, passing game coordinator, and eventually offensive coordinator over the past two years. Now, it appears that a head coaching position is on the horizon for him.
