The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly considering an unexpected candidate to fill their open defensive coordinator position, following the dismissal of Steve Wilks after a Super Bowl letdown.

ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio has cited multiple sources identifying former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as a possible contender for the role with the Niners, despite no confirmation of an interview with the team thus far.

Staley, who recently interviewed for the vacant defensive coordinator spot with the Los Angeles Rams only to see the job go to internal candidate Chris Shula, has also reportedly met with the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers. Despite facing challenges in his head coaching tenure, the 49ers seem to be valuing his prior achievements as a defensive coordinator. His notable period as the DC for the Rams in 2020 saw the team leading the NFL in total defense and in points allowed per game.
