The defending NFC Champions began the season with a strong 10-1 start and appeared to be in contention for the top seed in the NFC. However, the team has since experienced a three-game losing streak, two of which were lost by over 20 points.
The Eagles had an opportunity to break their losing streak against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night, but a late game-winning touchdown pass from Drew Lock to Jaxon Smith-Njigba dashed their hopes. After the game, Hurts drew attention by suggesting that the team lacked commitment.
Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that there is "internal concern" regarding last year's MVP runner-up:
"It's clear that Hurts possesses many of the intangibles required to be an elite quarterback, including passing and running abilities, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to being the best. However, team sources have indicated that the Eagles would like their franchise quarterback to be more open in the locker room. While players like and respect Hurts, the team is concerned about his tendency to isolate himself when a more outward leadership style is needed, particularly during challenging times."
The Eagles finished the previous season with a 14-3 record, but they have already surpassed their 2022 loss total this year. Of particular concern is the team's overall regression, especially on the defensive side.
In 2022, the defense allowed only 20.2 points per game, ranking eighth in the league, and the front seven accumulated 70 sacks. However, this year, Philadelphia currently ranks 26th in scoring defense, allowing 24.4 points per game, and has recorded just 39 sacks.
Despite these issues, Philadelphia remains tied with the Dallas Cowboys for the top record in the NFC East. The Eagles will look to rebound when they face the archrival New York Giants on Christmas Day.
