Recently, the Chicago Bears interviewed Zac Robinson, the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, for their vacant offensive coordinator position, according to a source confirmed by NBC Sports Chicago. The initial report of this interview came from Albert Breer of The MMQB.
At 37 years old, Robinson is widely regarded as one of the league's promising young coaches and is credited with playing a significant role in reshaping the Rams' passing game this season. Robinson began his coaching journey with the Rams in 2019, serving initially as the assistant quarterbacks coach under head coach Sean McVay. Over time, he also worked as the assistant wide receivers coach before eventually earning promotions to quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator in 2022.
Robinson brings a blend of youth and innovation to his coaching style, having experience coaching and playing as a quarterback, as well as working with wide receivers.
If selected, this would mark Robinson's first venture as an offensive coordinator. Additionally, he is reportedly scheduled to interview with the New Orleans Saints for their vacant offensive coordinator position.
The Bears have now either interviewed or expressed interest in eight potential candidates to fill the position left vacant by the recently departed Getsy.
Among these eight candidates, six have ties to or experience within the Shanahan-McVay coaching lineage, including Shane Waldron (Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator), Klint Kubiak (San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator), Liam Coen (Kentucky offensive coordinator), Greg Olson (Seahawks quarterbacks coach), Thomas Brown (Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator), and Zac Robinson.
The two remaining candidates, without direct connections to those coaching trees, are Greg Roman, former offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, and Marcus Brady, senior offensive analyst for the Philadelphia Eagles.
General manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus seem to favor candidates with a background in the Shanahan system, which is highly regarded across the league for its quarterback-friendly approachmaking it particularly appealing to a team with an uncertain future at quarterback. The search for a coordinator who not only understands the system's fundamental principles but can also adapt it innovatively to fit the team's personnel remains a top priority for Eberflus and Poles.
Robinson, Waldron, and Kubiak appear to align well with these criteria. However, with the list of candidates now at eight and possibly still growing, it seems the Bears' search for the ideal offensive coordinator may extend for some time.
