During an interview on Monday, Richard Sherman criticized the referee's decision and proposed an alternative action the league should have taken. "If the call is debatable, you should not make it," said Sherman on The Volume Sports. "In the National Football League, during the Super Bowl, if the call can be debated afterward, you do not make the call. New York should have called and said, 'Hey, waive that off. We are not letting the game be determined like this.' They did not, and that was two mistakes in one play." Sherman continued, "Instead, we watched them run the clock out and kick a field goal. It just does not feel right."
Despite criticism of the call, the NFL referees who made the decision strongly defended it. Eagles cornerback James Bradberry even admitted that it was the correct call, stating, "It was a holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide," after Super Bowl LVII. Although the call was unfortunate given the timing, it appeared to be the right call at the time.
