One NFL executive confided to Mike Sando of The Athletic that a trade that involves the electrifying quarterback and Miami Dolphins' starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa could be feasible: «Mike McDaniel might excel with Lamar. Perhaps a Lamar-for-Tua trade would make sense.» Jackson is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason, however, the Ravens can retain his services by utilizing the franchise tag. With a non-exclusive tag, another team can sign the quarterback to an offer sheet and surrender two first-round picks to acquire Jackson.
The aforementioned executive ultimately opines that «Baltimore will tag him and hold onto» Jackson.
«The application of the exclusive tag would entail greater costs and prevent other teams from signing Jackson to an offer sheet, while facilitating the Ravens to maximize compensation in a trade. The implementation of the non-exclusive tag would be reasonable if the Ravens were optimistic that another team would sign Jackson to an offer sheet. In such a scenario, the Ravens would receive two first-round draft choices in return for Jackson if they elected to release him.» Even if Jackson is traded, it may still pose a challenge for his new team to reach an agreement on a new contract as the quarterback has been seeking a fully guaranteed contract comparable to that of Deshaun Watson. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on Sunday that Jackson and the Ravens are $100 million apart in contract discussions when it comes to guaranteed funds, as per Dov Kleiman.
Sending Jackson to the Dolphins could be advantageous for both teams. Tagovailoa had an exceptional season, amassing a career-high 3,548 yards and 25 touchdowns. The only hindrance to his future prospects is the concussion issue that caused him to miss several regular season games and a playoff game.
Although the Ravens are keen to bring Jackson back, it is uncertain whether Jackson will sign with Baltimore unless he is compensated handsomely.
The outcome remains to be seen.
