Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has broken his silence regarding a report that the team threatened to bench him after their Week 8 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. According to Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz, the Broncos actually threatened to bench Wilson during their bye week if he didn't adjust his contract.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Wilson confirmed the report, stating that the Broncos did approach him during the bye week and told him that if he didn't change his contract, specifically the injury guarantee, he would be benched for the remainder of the year. While Wilson expressed disappointment with the decision, he also mentioned his hope to remain with the Broncos in 2024.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero noted that if Wilson were to suffer an injury, the Broncos would owe him $37 million in guaranteed money for 2025. Wilson had agreed to a five-year, $245 million extension before his debut with the Broncos in 2022.

The Broncos' decision to bench Wilson was surprising to many, as they are still mathematically in contention for the playoffs with a 7-8 record. Additionally, Wilson has shown significant improvement under head coach Sean Payton this year, with a 66.4% completion rate, 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions after a challenging first year in Denver. However, it appears that the Broncos are prioritizing long-term cap space over their slim playoff chances.
