Soldier Field's grass to be revamped before the regular season
The grass at Soldier Field was looking rough yesterday, thanks in part to a recent Elton John concert that took place at Soldier Field a few days ago. NFLPA president JC Tretter noticed the condition of the grass, and he had something to say.
«The NFL said that this field met minimum testing standards,» Tretter tweeted. «We clearly need to reevaluate what is an acceptable surface for players to compete on. We need new testing metrics looking at the performance and safety of every field. The NFL can and should do better.»
Well, Brad Biggs reported that the Bears are currently doing something about it.
Soldier Field will be 100% re-sodded after the Rammstein concert and before Sept 11 opener. That has been the plan all along. You can't just go to the sod store and replace your field without pre-planning. The field where the stage was for Elton John was replaced before today's game. The NFL said the field passed safety measurements this week for the field and the reality is that the brown spots probably looked worse than the field actually was. No one should act surprised however as the field has had issues for years. I'd expect a solid surface for Week 1.
