On Wednesday, the Seahawks announced Mike McDonald as their new head coach, while on Thursday, Dan Quinn was named as the successor to Ron Rivera in Washington.
The coaching carousel in this cycle was particularly competitive and full of surprises. Perhaps the most unexpected twist was Raheem Morris securing a position with the Atlanta Falcons, despite earlier reports strongly suggesting Bill Belichick was the frontrunner for the job.
Belichick now finds himself at the forefront of a group of nine highly regarded candidates who were left without coaching roles at the close of this hiring cycle, following his departure from the New England Patriots.
Mike Vrabel, who was considered an attractive candidate after parting ways with the Tennessee Titans, ended up being passed over. Meanwhile, Pete Carroll will not be coaching in the NFL this year as he transitions into an advisory role.
In addition to these prominent figures, there were other notable coaches who didn't secure new positions. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson initially appeared to be a top contender but ultimately decided to remain with the team. Similarly, Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator for the Lions, is also on this list. Eric Bieniemy, who left the Kansas City Chiefs in search of better opportunities, received minimal attention following the Washington Commanders' underwhelming performance during his first season as their offensive coordinator.
Rounding out the list are Anthony Weaver, the associate head coach and defensive line coach for the Baltimore Ravens; Ejiro Evero, the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers; and Mike Kafka, the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants.
