The Chicago Bears, who hold the No. 9 overall pick, are focusing on securing a left tackle for the future. According to draft experts, there are two top prospects in consideration: Peter Skoronski from Northwestern and Paris Johnson Jr. from Ohio State. If the Bears decide to stay put at No. 9, it's highly likely that one of these two talented players will be their choice. However, if they opt to explore other options, free agency might be the way to go for bolstering their offensive line.

One intriguing name that has emerged in free agency is Donovan Smith, an eight-year veteran who was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March. Smith brings experience and stability to the table, which could be valuable for the Bears as they look to solidify their offensive front. While the Bears have some moving parts on their O-line, Smith could be a viable option if they prioritize him as a former second-round pick.

Smith has been a reliable and consistent presence on Tampa Bay's offensive line throughout his NFL career, having appeared in and started an impressive 124 out of 130 possible regular season games, as per Pro Football Reference. His experience and skillset could make him a valuable asset for the Chicago Bears, especially in protecting their quarterback, Justin Fields. If the Bears decide to trade down in the draft or go in a different direction with their first-round pick, Smith could be a reliable starter at left tackle.

According to expert analyst Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report, Smith could command a lucrative three-year, $33 million contract, with $20 million guaranteed. Smith recently signed a two-year extension worth $31.8 million with the Bucs in March 2021, showcasing his value in the league.

Motton mentions that the Superbowl champ is poised to sign the most lucrative contract among all available free agent offensive linemen. Teams are lining up for Smith's services.

He also mentions, that the Chicago Bears may be the ideal destination for him, especially if the team is looking to make a transition.

Smith isn't a Pro-Bowl or All-Pro tackle, though he's had a decent career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Going into his age-30 term, Smith should be able to push for a starting job, which means a team may be willing to pay him at least $10 million per year.

Thus far, seven offensive linemen have signed deals worth $10 million or more annually in free agency. Smith should be the eighth. If the Chicago Bears prefer to move Braxton Jones into a backup role, Smith could start at left tackle in the Windy City.

With the Bears in need of solidifying their offensive line and Smith's impressive track record of performance, Chicago could be a perfect fit for the talented left tackle.

As the team looks to make improvements and elevate their game, Smith's experience and skill set could be a valuable asset in protecting their quarterback and bolstering their overall performance.
