The 49ers have signed a new quarterback!
49ers' QB Jimmy Garoppolo broke several bones in his left foot in the first quarter of Sunday's victory over Miami and is out for the season, which followed Trey Lance's broken ankle in Week 2, which all led to rookie Brock Purdy taking over Sunday and not looking half bad, with a lot of room to grow.
With that being said, no one really expects the 49ers to go on their playoff push with Purdy as the QB. Their roster might just be the best one in the NFL and it would be a shame for them to "waste" it with Purdy under center, with all due respect to the young man. Even though I could be wrong, I don't expect him to be able to win a Super Bowl this season.
Well, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday, citing sources, that San Francisco is signing Johnson off the Denver Broncos' practice squad and on to its 53-man roster.
Johnson, an Oakland native, has been a part of 14 different teams over 13 seasons since being selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Johnson appeared in four games last season for the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens. He started one game for Baltimore and threw for 304 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 28-of-40 passing in a 41-21 loss.
He has also spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants, Houston Texans, then-Oakland Raiders, Washington, Detroit Lions, and finally, the Denver Broncos.
Johnson has appeared in 37 games with nine starts over his lengthy NFL career. He has passed for 2,270 yards with 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions during that span and is 1-8 as a starter.
