Daniel Greenberg reported that the Chicago Bears have created a new department in football operations called football technology.

There are 6 people in the department and it's led by Mike Santarelli who is the executive director of football technology.

This is nice to hear. Technology has become so important in the NFL. In fact, technology helps players and teams communicate and gives coaches the tools needed to create game plans and adjust them on the fly.

For example, technology provides players with electronic playbooks and position-specific game films on club-provided tablets. As the game unfolds, coaches can dissect opponents' offense and defense on league-provided tablets.

Technology also helps better protect the players. Its impact is felt in sturdier playing surfaces and more advanced pads and helmets. It allows teams to keep electronic medical records to better treat players and allows certified athletic trainers to use video to spot possible concussions and other potential injuries during games.

The teams are now also collecting data on everything. From the number of contacts a player receives/gives in a week to the number of miles he ran, they are now collecting data on everything. Don't even get me starter on the impact that technology now has on nutrition and training.

The sky is the limit and I am glad that the Bears are actively trying to get ahead of the curve by becoming one of the most technologically advanced teams in the sport.
