The newly appointed Chicago Bears quarterbacks coach, Kerry Joseph, recently shared insights into his coaching philosophy and what he values in a quarterback during his time at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. Joseph emphasized several key qualities he looks for in a signal-caller, including arm talent, accuracy, delivery quickness, physicality, toughness, and swagger, which he defined as confidence under control.
However, Joseph's comments have raised questions about their implications for the current Bears quarterback, Justin Fields. While Joseph didn't make any overt criticisms of Fields, his focus on decision-making, timing, and accuracy aligns with some of the areas where Fields has faced criticism. Notably, Fields had a tendency to hold onto the ball longer than other NFL quarterbacks, according to Next Gen Stats.
It's worth noting that Kerry Joseph brings a unique perspective to his coaching role, having played both quarterback and safety during his career in the NFL and the Canadian Football League (CFL). He began his coaching career with the New Orleans Saints as a training camp intern in 2014 and has held various coaching positions, including co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, interim head coach, RBs coach, and passing game coordinator, before joining the Chicago Bears. He also has a connection with new Bears Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron, having previously worked together with the Seattle Seahawks.
