The Chicago Bears managed to secure the services of veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis this season, and it was partly due to the persuasive efforts of two former Packers colleagues: current Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and tight end Robert Tonyan.
Lewis revealed that Getsy played a significant role in convincing him to make the move to Chicago. They had frequent discussions over a period of two months, helping Lewis make up his mind about his next career move.
As for Tonyan, he played a pivotal role in persuading Lewis as well. Tonyan attributed his tight end skills to Lewis and recognized the impact he could make as a veteran leader. Knowing that Lewis was seeking a place where he could fit in and have an impact, Tonyan assured him that the Bears' system and the team's direction aligned perfectly with his goals.
According to Tonyan, it didn't take much convincing once he shared his case with Lewis. The Bears' young, hungry, and active culture, along with the coaching staff and the team's future, were strong selling points that appealed to Lewis.
In Lewis' own words, "And, yeah, here we are. Obviously, Luke is somebody I got to know in Green Bay and really respect him and his coaching style, and always treated me like a man, and we respect each other that way, and Bobby is my guy, he's like an extension of me, so if he's saying something, I believe it."
When Tonyan received the news that Lewis had officially signed with the Bears, his initial emotions were not just excitement or joy, but a feeling of accomplishment, knowing that he played a vital role in bringing Lewis to Chicago.
With Lewis now joining the Bears, the team adds a veteran presence and a talented tight end to their roster, all thanks to the convincing efforts of Getsy and Tonyan.
