Despite their rocky start at 0-4 this season, the Chicago Bears have managed to secure a 5-4 record in their last nine games, keeping the possibility of a playoff berth alive.

With the Green Bay Packers suffering a loss to the New York Giants on Monday night, there's a chance that the Bears could be just one game away from clinching the final wild-card spot in the NFC.

As a result, it's becoming increasingly likely that the Week 18 matchup between the Bears and the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field could be featured as the Sunday Night Football game, with both teams vying for a playoff spot.

In a similar vein, just as quarterback Justin Fields is making a compelling case to be the Bears' long-term quarterback, head coach Matt Eberflus is building a strong argument for his return for a third season.

Eberflus faced considerable pressure, especially after a winless start during the first month of his second season as the Bears' head coach. Reports even emerged last week suggesting that the Bears were scouting coordinators from other teams as potential replacements in the offseason.

However, Eberflus seems to be putting the Bears in a position where they may have no choice but to retain him for a third season.

It's challenging to dispute the success Eberflus has achieved as the season has progressed. He has transformed the defense into a top-10 unit in the NFL and kept the team in contention for a playoff spot.

While Eberflus' performance is commendable, there could still be room for changes on his coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy's performance may warrant reconsideration, and if Eberflus isn't willing to make changes to his offensive coaching staff, that might be the only scenario where a head coaching change is considered. However, at present, it appears that Eberflus is trending towards job security after the season.
