He edged out P.J. Walker, a veteran quarterback who was cut by the Bears on Sunday, and Nathan Peterman, another quarterback released by the team but considered for their practice squad.
Upon confirming Bagent's QB2 status, General Manager Ryan Poles sent him a text that was both brief and filled with high expectations.
"Ryan texted me, congratulating me and advising me to be an asset to Justin. He emphasized the need to stay focused and prepared, given the unpredictable nature of the season," Bagent shared on Wednesday. "My goal is to contribute to the team in any way I can and be prepared for any situation."
Choosing Bagent over two experienced quarterbacks was not a decision made lightly. Walker had not only served as a backup but also started five games for the Carolina Panthers last season. The Bears are also committed to paying Walker $2 million, part of a 2-year, $4.5 million deal they signed him to.
"Any decision like this implies you're highly impressed with another player who comes with big expectations," said Poles.
For his part, Bagent is committed to doing his best. "The game plan will be studied thoroughly, understood, and I'll put my best foot forward," he stated.
In three preseason games, Bagent threw for 156 yards, completing 20 of 29 passes with one rushing touchdown. He had only two incomplete passes in his first two preseason games.
Poles acknowledged Co-Director of Player Personnel Jeff King and area scout Tom Bradway for advocating for Bagent, who won the D-2 equivalent of the Heisman Trophy last season at Shepherd University.
Reflecting on Bagent's successful preseason, Poles said, "Tyson deserves a lot of credit for how he's handled the entire situationreally poised. It's precisely these kinds of performances that make roster decisions challenging, and he forced his way onto the roster."
