The latest reports regarding the Chicago Bears' search for an offensive coordinator indicate that they may be contemplating retaining Justin Fields and possibly trading their first-round draft pick, much like their strategy from the previous year.

General Manager Ryan Poles had previously expressed openness to various options and mentioned a decision in April. Their most recent candidate for the offensive coordinator position is someone experienced in designing offensive schemes for mobile quarterbacks, which aligns with Fields' style of play.

According to a report by NFL Network's Peter Schrager, the Bears have conducted an interview with Greg Roman, the former offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens. Roman, a seasoned NFL coach hailing from the football-rich John Carroll University in Ohio, previously served as Jim Harbaugh's offensive coordinator during the San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl run in the 2012 season. In 2019, under John Harbaugh's leadership, Roman directed the Ravens to the NFL's second-ranked offense, with Lamar Jackson as the quarterback.

Among the reported candidates for the Bears' offensive coordinator role, Roman stands as one of the most experienced, despite his dismissal during the 2022 season in Baltimore. While Roman's potential hiring suggests a continuation with Fields, there remains the possibility of exploring other options, including USC's Caleb Williams, who, although a mobile quarterback, has a different style of play compared to Fields.

Roman's coaching career includes stints as the offensive coordinator for the 49ers from 2011 to 2014, followed by a role as Buffalo's offensive coordinator from 2015 to 2016 and then as the Ravens' offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022. Notably, three of his 49ers offenses ranked among the top five in scoring, and the Ravens claimed the top spot in scoring in both 2019 and 2020. His tenure with the Buffalo Bills saw the offense ranked 20th overall when Tyrod Taylor was the quarterback under coach Anthony Lynn.

In 2019, Lamar Jackson led the NFL in touchdown passes (36), boasting a passer rating of 113.3 and earning the NFL MVP title. He also set an NFL quarterback rushing record with 1,206 yards on the ground, leading the league in yards per attempt that season.

Greg Roman, 51, began his NFL journey with the Carolina Panthers in 1995 as a strength and conditioning coach, later transitioning to an offensive line assistant role. He served as the Texans' tight ends coach from 2002 to 2005 and spent two years as a quarterbacks coach in 2004-05. Following that, Roman joined the Ravens for two years as an offensive line assistant. After a brief period in high school and college coaching, he re-emerged with Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco, serving as the associate head coach at Stanford for two years. Before becoming an offensive coordinator, he also spent two years as a tight ends coach for the Ravens.

In addition to Greg Roman, the Bears have reportedly conducted interviews with other candidates, including Shane Waldron (Seahawks offensive coordinator), Klint Kubiak (49ers passing game coordinator), Liam Coen (Kentucky OC), and Greg Olson (Seahawks quarterbacks coach).
