As Fields wraps up the veteran minicamp, he commented, "If you're comparing it from now to last year I would say it's a big difference." Given that 2022 saw Fields undertaking a massive revamp of his footwork, this difference comes as no surprise. The team went to great lengths, altering even the minutest aspects of Fields' footwork in the passing game, such as the foot he leads with while taking a snap in shotgun.

While such modifications may seem negligible, their implications for Fields' capacity to make consistent passes and manage the passing offense are substantial. As Fields himself explained, "Our whole offense is tied with my feet. I'm just trying to use my feet as the clock in my head just to move from each route in the progression." In essence, the positioning of his feet during his dropback should correlate with the whereabouts of his receivers. Despite the potential for disruption from defensive tactics, Fields' feet play a crucial role in guiding his progressions.

Of course, all these enhancements in fundamentals are in vain if they can't translate to on-field performances. While the regular season is still a few months away, Fields' execution of the offense in early summer program practices has reportedly improved. That being said, there's no denying that Fields' footwork still has room for improvement. But then again, this is true for any quarterback. Just like Fields' footwork will never be absolutely flawless, the Bears' passing attack, too, will never be completely impeccable. Indeed, we witnessed mistakes, overthrows, and interceptions during OTAs and veteran minicamp as Fields and his crew were getting their groove back. As the Bears have yet to don pads, the game dynamics will change when more aggressive defense comes into play. Nevertheless, Fields' improved footwork and his growing confidence in it have laid a solid groundwork for the offense to make considerable strides this year.

As Fields rightly summed it up, "It's truly amazing when you have that feeling going in."
