The NFL Trade Deadline Looms: Potential Chicago Bears Trade Candidates

As the NFL trade deadline approaches in just 12 days, it's becoming more than just a date on the calendar for football fans. Similar to the NBA and MLB trade deadlines, it's becoming a significant event for NFL enthusiasts.

In recent years, we've witnessed teams making substantial roster changes right before the trade deadline. Trades like the one that sent Von Miller to the Los Angeles Rams, ultimately contributing to their Super Bowl success, or last year's moves where the Chicago Bears traded away linebacker Roquan Smith and pass-rusher Robert Quinn to create salary cap space.

This year, the Bears might once again be active participants in the trade deadline. Unfortunately, their 1-5 start to the season puts them in sell mode for the second consecutive year, which is unexpected given the preseason aspirations of GM Ryan Poles and Head Coach Matt Eberflus.

Here are some Bears players who could be on the trade block:

1. CB Jaylon Johnson: Despite his desire to stay in Chicago, Johnson's contract extension talks have been quiet. With an impressive performance and an 80.9 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus, he could be a valuable trade chip, especially to teams in need of secondary help.

2. WR Darnell Mooney: Mooney's role as Justin Fields' top target has diminished, and with uncertainty surrounding Fields as the long-term QB1, the Bears might consider trading him. Mooney's 1,000-yard receiving season could make him an attractive option for playoff contenders.

3. DE Yannick Ngakoue: While not having a stellar season, Ngakoue's pass-rush potential is still appealing to teams seeking help in that area. A trade could yield a favorable return for the Bears, similar to the Robert Quinn trade last year.

4. FS Eddie Jackson: Though under contract until 2024, Jackson's value as a defensive back at the trade deadline shouldn't be underestimated. His recent interception and forced fumble season in 2020 could intrigue potential suitors.

5. QB Justin Fields: While a controversial move, trading Fields is explored further in another post.

6. DT Andrew Billings: Billings, a valuable signing by Ryan Poles, could fetch the Bears a draft pick due to his strong performance in the trenches. Many playoff contenders would welcome help in that area.

7. C/G Cody Whitehair: Whitehair's struggles at center led to his benching, but he might be better suited to play guard. A change of scenery and salary relief could benefit both Whitehair and the Bears.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Bears will have decisions to make, balancing their present needs and future prospects.
