First of all, the 3 Technique is the defensive pre-snap position where the defensive linemen position themselves on the outside shoulder of the offensive guard. In other words, a 3 technique defensive lineman aligns between the offensive guard and tackle.

It is one of the most important positions on your defense because this player is the true anchor against the run game. In addition, if the player who plays this position happens to be a great pass rusher, he can create some incredible mismatches on the inside.

Some examples of the great 3 techniques players in the NFL are Aaron Donald, Chris Jones and Cameron Heyward. These guys are not necessarily huge 300-pounds+ players. Yet, they still have the strength to be effective in the run game and they can be quick enough to get to the quarterback.

In 2022, here are the two best options for the 3-technique.

Quinton Jefferson

He is the prototypical 3-technique lineman. He can rush the passer really well. He was actually ranked inside the top 10 with quarterback pressure from an interior defensive lineman last year. One of the biggest reasons I think he could be on his way is because his coach last year was the new Bears defensive line coach, Travis Smith

Bilal Nichols

Nichols has been with the Bears for the past 4 seasons now. He was a very good player alongside Akiem Hicks. While he is not the flashiest guy on the field, he gets the job done. He was able to have 3 sacks last year with 9 QB hits. I think he could be a solid option and he would not cost the team too much.
