One of the more disappointing developments of the past two years has been Nate Davis. When the Chicago Bears signed Davis, they were bringing in one of the better guards on the market. Unfortunately, he has not lived up to that expectation. One of the main reasons the Titans let him go was his perceived lack of motivation to quickly return from minor injuries. That reputation has followed him to Chicago.
Davis missed significant time in his first season with the Bears. Some absences were due to injuries, while others were for personal matters. Either way, his extended time away hindered his transition to the new team. He looked lost in the first week of the season, then had to step away to attend to a family issue. Upon his return, he appeared rusty, and just as he began to play well, he got injured again. It was a frustrating cycle.
Optimists might argue that Davis will be healthy this year, better integrated into the offense, and motivated by the possibility of being cut after the season. However, we have yet to see any evidence of this.
Nate Davis' second year with the Bears is off to another concerning start. He has missed time during OTAs, prompting the Bears to start experimenting with different line combinations to see what they might look like without Davis.
They have moved Ryan Bates from center to guard and given Matt Pryor opportunities as well. Both players were added this offseason due to Davis' struggles in his first year with the team.
There is a chance that the Bears' best combination this year might be Braxton Jones, Teven Jenkins, Coleman Shelton, Ryan Bates, and Darnell Wright. At the very least, this could be their most reliable lineup.
