According To NFL Executive, AFC Contender In Talks To Colts About Blockbuster Jonathan Taylor Trade,
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, the 2021 rushing champion, is a name to watch on the trade market as the 2023 NFL season approaches.
Three weeks ago, Taylor requested a trade from the Colts after a meeting with team owner Jim Irsay, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Taylor is in the last year of his rookie contract.
In an interview with Kenneth Teape of NFL Analysis Network, a league executive revealed that they believe the Miami Dolphins are in talks with Indianapolis about a possible trade for Taylor. The executive stated:
"I'm not sure if a deal will come to fruition, but I believe the Dolphins and Colts have discussed a trade involving Jonathan Taylor. There's been quite a bit of chatter on that front."
Miami's running back depth chart is topped by 31-year-old Raheem Mostert, who led the team with 891 rushing yards last season. Veteran backs Jeff Wilson Jr. and Miles Gaskin, along with rookie De'Von Achane, are also on the Dolphins' roster.
Adding a proven talent like Taylor would significantly bolster Miami's offense, led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the NFL's top receiving duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The Dolphins haven't had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2016 when Jay Ajayi racked up 1,272 yards.
Despite missing six games last season, the 24-year-old Taylor managed to record 861 rushing yards and four touchdowns. In the previous year, he led the league with 1,811 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns.
The Colts will start their 2023 season at home against AFC South rival Jacksonville Jaguars on September 10.
