Just last weekend, he efficiently managed a game against a Raiders team led by Brian Hoyer, securing a significant victory on his home turf at noon. Such an achievement is a rarity among undrafted rookie quarterbacks in the annals of NFL history.
As a reward, Bagent now finds himself facing the formidable Justin Herbert in a primetime Sunday Night Football showdown, with the Bears' season hanging in the balance. The pressure is further intensified by the fact that this game is an away fixture.
For the rookie QB, this is an immense moment. In fact, it's a monumental occasion for the entire Bears coaching staff. Matt Eberflus, in particular, is undoubtedly willing to do whatever it takes to kickstart his Chicago tenure with the team's first winning streak, all under the watchful eyes of the entire nation.
This game is dripping with drama, and the stage is undeniably grand. I'm fully embracing this moment, and I hope you will too.
However, once the game kicks off, which matchups will dictate its ebb and flow? Where can Chicago exploit advantages within a depleted Chargers roster? In the latest episode of "Bear With Us," Nick and I delve into all of this and much more. Give it a listen and share your thoughts!
Within the podcast, Nick and I have identified two key matchups on offense and defense that we believe will shape the game's outcome. While you can find our explanations within the podcast itself, here are the matchups each of us has chosen:
Nick's Key Matchups:
Offense: Marcedes Lewis' Chip Blocks vs. Khalil MackOffense: Cody Whitehair & Lucas Patrick vs. LAC's Lackluster DTsDefense: TJ Edwards vs. Austin EkelerDefense: Andrew Billings vs. a weak LAC Interior OL
My Key Matchups:
Offense: Tyson Bagent vs. 'The Moment' (How will he respond when the Chargers inevitably force him to adjust?)Offense: DJ Moore vs. Asante SamuelDefense: Tyrique Stevenson vs. Keenan AllenDefense: Justin Herbert attacking Zone vs. Tremaine Edmunds
Bonus:
You might have sensed this on Sunday, but Tyson Bagent's dropback speed actually stands up to scrutiny against the stopwatch. Compared to Justin Fields, Bagent currently saves about half a second on 5-step and 7-step dropbacks through his precise footwork. This extra half-second seems to help Bagent remain elusive in the pocket and distribute the ball swiftly, resulting in the Bears' offensive line giving up their lowest QB hit total of the year (only 3 QB hits compared to Fields' average of 8 QB hits per game).
I'm genuinely pleased with how the video supplement turned outgive it a watch if you have around 52 seconds to spare. You may be surprised by how pronounced the difference is.
