The Chicago Bears may be eyeing a free safety in the upcoming NFL free agency, especially if they decide to part ways with veteran starter Eddie Jackson. According to NBC Sports Chicago's Alex Shapiro, the Bears could have their sights set on Mike Edwards, a recent Super Bowl champion from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Edwards, 27, boasts two Super Bowl rings from his five-year NFL career, notably winning in 2021 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Stepping up for the Chiefs during the latter part of the 2023 season after Bryan Cook's season-ending injury, Edwards started in their final nine games, including the playoffs, at free safety. With eight interceptions, five fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and four defensive touchdowns throughout his career, Edwards possesses the ballhawk skills suited for the Bears' secondary.

Financially, the Bears are well-positioned to afford Edwards, with approximately $34.74 million in effective cap space for the 2024 season. Pro Football Focus projects Edwards to sign a one-year deal worth $3.5 million in NFL free agency, making him an affordable option.

However, the real question arises regarding whether Edwards could effectively replace Jackson as the starter. Jackson's performance in pass coverage declined notably during his second season in Matt Eberflus' system, prompting speculation about his future with the team. Considering Jackson's $18.14 million cap hit for the 2024 season, the Bears face a decision to either retain him at a high cost or create cap space by releasing him.

While Edwards has demonstrated strengths in pass coverage and generated impactful plays, his performance as a run defender and his high missed tackle rate raise concerns. Thus, while Edwards could provide value to the Bears, they might hesitate to rely solely on him as Jackson's replacement.

Alternatively, the Bears could explore options in the 2024 NFL Draft to find Jackson's successor. Although unlikely to use their top picks on a safety, they possess multiple mid-round selections, offering opportunities to target prospects like Georgia's Javon Bullard or USC's Caleb Bullock. Additionally, trading down from a higher pick or potentially acquiring an additional second-round pick by trading quarterback Justin Fields could expand their draft options.

In conclusion, while Edwards presents a viable option, the Bears may pursue a combination of free agency and the draft to address their safety position effectively.
