The previous regime left the team with minimal cap space and many expiring contracts for players who were set to become free agents, and veterans currently under contract who were tying up money.
The biggest, and maybe most unexpected move was the Bears trading Khalil Mack, who carried the large-cap hit not only this season but for years to come. They always did not resign many starters such as Allen Robinson, Akiem Hicks, Bilal Nichols, and James Daniels. They also made cuts to Danny Trevethan, Tarik Cohen, and Nick Foles to clear up more room.
According to, OverTheCap, the Bears are projected to have $112 million in salary-cap space in 2023. This is when the next step on Ryan Poles rebuild is set to start.
Bears Insider Jacob Infante recently brought the idea of the Bears signing current Green Bay Packers Lineman, Elgton Jenkins in the 2023 offseason to mind.
And the more that idea floats in the air, the better it sounds. Of course, you have a young guard who has proven he deserved to be paid among the best and the Bears can make that happen. There is also the Luke Getsy and Lucas Patrick connection that could provide some help in the recruiting process if Jenkins becomes available.
This is just one possible 2023 scenario, the upcoming class is expected to have many big names in areas the Bears could improve. Deebo Samuel, DK Metcalf, Terry McLaurin, Quenton Nelson, and Orlando Brown Jr are just a few other big names that could be available if they fail to resign before free agency.
