The Minnesota Vikings made a significant financial commitment today to secure a vital asset in their offense.
Sources confirm that the Vikings inked a four-year, $68.5 million contract with tight end TJ Hockenson, setting new NFL records for both the average annual salary of $17.125 million and $42.5 million in guaranteed money for a player at his position. Hockenson had been lobbying for a new deal all summer and, while he didn't officially hold out of training camp, missed several practices due to minor issues, likely as a negotiating tactic.
With this agreement, the Vikings have cemented another foundational player in their offense for years to come. A contract extension for star wide receiver Justin Jefferson is reportedly in the pipeline and could be announced soon.
Hockenson joined the Vikings mid-season last year in a trade from the Detroit Lions, where he had been since being drafted 8th overall in 2019. During his 10-game stint with the Vikings, the former Iowa standout amassed 60 receptions from 86 targets, totaling 519 yards and scoring three touchdowns.
